Choosing a bag

How to choose a laptop backpack that actually fits

Screen inches are only the start. Three measurements and a quick compartment check make a better shortlist.

A laptop’s advertised screen size measures the screen diagonally. It does not describe the width, height or thickness of the computer’s casing. Two laptops with the same screen size can therefore need different amounts of space inside a backpack.

Measure the computer you will carry

  1. Close the laptop. Measure its longest edge, the shorter edge and its total thickness.
  2. Include its protection. If you use a hard shell or padded sleeve, measure the laptop with that fitted.
  3. Write down the model. Keep the exact model name and measurements together so they are easy to compare or send to support.

Use the same unit for both bag and device. Divide millimetres by ten to convert to centimetres. For example, a 325 × 225 × 18 mm computer measures 32.5 × 22.5 × 1.8 cm. This is an illustration, not a compatibility claim for a particular bag.

Compare the sleeve, not the outside of the backpack

The outer dimensions include the lining, padding and structure. They cannot tell you the clear width of a laptop compartment. Look for internal sleeve measurements and check whether the opening narrows at the zip or curves at the corners.

Helsinki lists an outer size of 42 × 30 × 12 cm and a padded laptop sleeve. Those outer measurements alone do not confirm that a particular 15- or 16-inch computer fits. If the compartment measurements are not provided, ask us to confirm them with your device dimensions before ordering.

Allow room to slide the computer in and out without forcing the zip, bending the corners or stretching the lining. A tight fit becomes less convenient when the main compartment is full.

Look at protection and pocket placement

A padded sleeve separates the computer from other items; it does not make the bag drop-proof or waterproof. Check whether the base is cushioned and avoid putting a bottle or heavy loose charger directly against the laptop. Keep liquid containers properly closed and separate.

Interior photographs are especially useful here. Look for the sleeve opening, retaining strap if present, and the position of smaller pockets. In a messenger or shoulder bag, also check how the computer sits when the bag is carried sideways.

Leave room for the rest of the day

Count your charger, mouse, notebook, headphones and lunch. If the laptop takes up the full back panel, a deep lunch box may push against it. Our backpack size guide explains how capacity and shape work together.

For commuting, compare the empty weight of the bag with your loaded setup. Choose a layout that lets you reach your keys and travel card without opening the laptop compartment at every stop.

Use this final check before ordering

  • Exact laptop model and closed dimensions recorded.
  • Additional case or sleeve included in those dimensions.
  • Compartment and opening confirmed, not inferred from outer size.
  • Space left for charger, bottle and daily essentials.
  • Material and care requirements understood.

Start with canvas backpacks or leather backpacks, then compare the details of a short list. Our canvas versus leather guide can help with the final material choice.

Questions answered

Will every 15.6-inch laptop fit the same backpack?

No. Screen size does not include the casing or an additional protective sleeve. Compare the complete device measurements with the usable compartment and opening.

Can I use the main compartment instead?

Only if your device fits comfortably and has appropriate protection. A loose laptop in the main compartment does not gain the separation offered by a dedicated padded sleeve.
