Choosing a bag
Roll-top or zip backpack: choose the opening that suits your day
Fast access or a flexible top? Compare the details you will notice every time you open your bag.

In this guide
The opening changes how a backpack feels in daily use. It decides how quickly you reach a charger, how easily a lunch box passes through and what happens when you add an extra layer. Compare the complete layout alongside the closure, because two bags with the same type of opening can behave quite differently.
A roll-top gives you room to adjust
A roll-top folds or rolls down before being secured. It can accommodate a changing load within the model’s designed range, while keeping a relatively simple outline. The useful capacity depends on how much material must remain available for closing.
Lund lists a 16–20 L capacity. That range is useful when comparing your daily load, but the top still needs to close correctly. Do not treat a fully extended opening as a normal closed height. Look at the fastening and the manufacturer’s closing instructions rather than applying a universal number of folds.
A zip can make access more direct
A zipped opening often takes fewer movements to open and close. A wide zip path can make the contents easier to see, especially when the bag is resting on a desk. Check how far the zip actually travels: a narrow top opening and a zip that opens around the sides give different access.
On Coda, the close-up photographs show the zip and lining. Compare that view with the interior layout. Keep fabric and cables clear of the teeth, and do not force the slider when the bag is overfilled.

| Your routine | What to inspect |
|---|---|
| Taking out a laptop | Whether the sleeve can be reached directly or only through the main opening. |
| Adding a jacket | Space left after packing and whether the closure still works freely. |
| Finding keys or tickets | An accessible pocket that avoids opening the main compartment each time. |
Use the same belongings for both comparisons. Our work bag organisation guide helps separate quick-access items from things you rarely need during the journey.
Check fit, rain protection and the final size
A large opening does not establish laptop fit, and a rolled opening does not establish waterproofness. Confirm the compartment measurements and the complete bag’s stated protection. The rain protection guide explains why seams and side pockets matter too.
Compare the closed dimensions with a bag you already use. A tall, narrow shape may suit your routine better than a wider opening—or the reverse. Start with canvas backpacks and leather backpacks, then narrow the choice using our capacity and dimensions guide.
Questions answered
Does a roll-top always hold more?
No. Compare the published usable capacity and closed dimensions of each model. The closure type alone does not determine volume.
Which opening is best for commuting?
Choose the one that makes your repeated actions easy. A convenient external pocket or separate laptop access can matter as much as the main opening.

Water-resistant or waterproof: what can your bag really handle?
Fabric is only part of the answer. Check the seams, opening and the way you protect what is inside.
