How to store a canvas or leather bag between uses
A clean interior, a dry lining and gentle support help keep a bag ready for its next outing.

In this guide
A bag often spends more time on a shelf than on a journey. Putting it away with a damp lining, heavy contents or folded straps can create problems that a quick clean will not solve. A simple storage routine starts with checking the inside as carefully as the outside.
Empty every pocket before cleaning
Remove food, receipts, pens, batteries and any loose accessories. Check small zipped pockets and the bottom of the lining. Shake out loose debris gently or use a soft brush appropriate for the material.
Clean only as the bag’s finish allows. Our waxed canvas care guide and leather care guide cover different routines; a product suited to one material may be wrong for another. Do not add conditioner or wax simply because the bag is going into storage.
Wait until the lining and seams are dry
If the bag has been in rain or contains a damp item, open it and let air circulate in a dry room. Check the base and deeper pockets before putting it away. Keep it away from radiators, hot air and direct sun while it dries.
A dry exterior does not always mean the padding or lining is dry. If you notice persistent mustiness or visible mould, keep the bag separate and seek material-specific cleaning advice before storing it alongside other belongings. Avoid masking a problem with perfume.

Support the shape without stretching it
Use clean, dry, unprinted paper or a suitable soft cloth to support a structured bag lightly. The aim is to prevent collapse, not to stretch the seams. Avoid coloured printed paper against a pale lining and do not leave heavy items inside.
Rest the bag on a clean shelf where possible. Arrange straps naturally without sharp folds or tension. A heavy bag hanging for months from a small handle places a continuing load on that attachment. For a soft bag, follow any folding instructions provided for that exact model.
Choose a breathable, sheltered space
A clean fabric dust bag can help protect against dust. Avoid sealing a bag in plastic while moisture might remain, and do not compress several bags together. Keep waxed canvas away from delicate light-coloured fabrics if contact could leave marks.
Choose a stable, dry place away from strong light and heat. Leave room around a weekend bag rather than storing it under a stack of heavy boxes. Check stored bags occasionally, particularly if the room becomes humid or is rarely used.
Inspect it before the next trip
Check the lining, stitching, fasteners and straps, then open and close the bag without forcing anything. Pack a normal load and adjust the straps again. Use our organisation guide to rebuild the contents around your current routine.
If you are comparing another model, browse leather bags and canvas backpacks with its care requirements in mind as well as its appearance.
Questions answered
Should I condition leather before every period of storage?
Not automatically. Follow the instructions for the particular leather finish and its condition. Too much or unsuitable treatment can change the surface.
Can I leave a bag packed all winter?
Remove food, liquids, batteries and unnecessary weight. Empty storage makes it easier to check the lining, protect the shape and notice moisture.
