Water-resistant or waterproof: what can your bag really handle?
Fabric is only part of the answer. Check the seams, opening and the way you protect what is inside.

In this guide
A few drops on the way to the station and an hour in heavy rain are very different conditions. The words on a product page should help you tell them apart. Start with the protection stated for the whole bag, then look at the fabric, stitching and closure rather than relying on one material name.
Understand the three descriptions
Water-repellent usually describes a surface that encourages droplets to bead. Water-resistant indicates some resistance to moisture, with limits that depend on construction and exposure. Waterproof needs a clear explanation of the conditions the product is designed to withstand.
These terms do not establish a universal amount of rain or a safe immersion time. If a model has a test rating, read what was tested and under which conditions. A photograph of water beading on fabric is not evidence that every seam and pocket keeps water out.
Follow the possible routes into the bag
Check stitching, zip ends, external pockets and the main opening. A coated fabric can still be sewn with unsealed seams. A flap covers an opening but can leave gaps at its sides. A roll-top needs enough free fabric to close as intended; the closure alone does not establish waterproofness.
Look closely at the side and interior photographs of Göteborg and Lund. Their waxed canvas is a material feature, not a claim that the entire bag can be submerged. Our roll-top versus zip guide explains the practical differences between openings.

Match protection to the journey
- Short walks in changeable weather: check the bag’s stated resistance and keep sensitive items in a suitable protective pouch.
- Long or exposed journeys: consider a correctly fitted rain cover and separate protection for electronics. Covers can leave the back panel exposed.
- Water sports or immersion risk: choose equipment specifically rated for that use. An everyday canvas bag is a different product.
Keep bottles closed and away from the laptop compartment: moisture can come from inside as well as outside. Use our laptop fit guide to allow room for the protective sleeve you actually carry.
Dry first; treat only when appropriate
After rain, empty the bag and blot excess moisture with a clean cloth. Open the compartments and let it dry naturally in a ventilated place, away from a radiator or hair dryer. Do not put wet belongings back into a damp lining.
Wax can refresh a compatible waxed canvas finish, but it will not seal every opening. Check the instructions for both the bag and treatment; test on a discreet area because the colour can change. Follow our canvas cleaning and re-waxing steps before choosing Waka wax. If a treatment is not specified for the leather trim, keep it off that trim.
Questions answered
Is every roll-top backpack waterproof?
No. The fabric, seams and complete closure system must also suit the stated conditions. A roll-top shape by itself does not prove waterproofness.
Can I test my bag by putting it under the shower?
Avoid a soaking test on an everyday canvas or leather bag. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and keep electronics out of any care or inspection process.
